Be A Student And A Teacher
79. Be a student and a teacher.
What I love about people who are involved in the “self-help” industry is that they are not selfish. I truly believe they are motivated by helping others be the best that they can be. How do I know this? In many of the books, CDs and videos I have encountered, one of the statements constantly made is to be sure to share your new found knowledge so you can help others.
They almost always insist that part of the deal of them sharing their knowledge with you is that you share it with others. Most of us find great joy in assisting people in improving their lives. This book was born by taking what I have learned and then incorporating it into my own system that I believe makes the knowledge user friendly. But before I became a teacher, I was a student.
It took some time to acquire the knowledge I am sharing with you. The process of a student is an important one. Something that I had forgotten after finishing grad school is that your days of being a student never end. This is an important step to comprehend if you are trying to reach new levels of success. You need to understand that you will always be a student and if you acknowledge that fact, you then must find the places to go and learn.
Being a student means going to class. When I say “class” I mean metaphorically speaking. For you going to class is any opportunity you can find to better yourself. This can be in reading, writing, listening, and on and on. These opportunities have been around you all this time, but you didn’t know where to look and probably didn’t think you were still in school. Many of us were poor students so the idea of continued learning may be scary. If this is so, the thought of being a teacher may be even scarier.
If you want to become smarter at any trade you have learned or any knowledge you have acquired, teach it to others. In grad school when I finally made the decision to be smart, I took the opportunity to tutor others on the knowledge I had already mastered, and in doing so it became even more concrete in my head. In the same respect, by sharing the headspace knowledge I have learned with you, I in turn have begun to own it more. It is becoming more and more lodged into my subconscious mind. So you must also be a teacher. By sharing the knowledge you have learned, you will not only be helping others, but you’ll also be helping yourself.
